Almeirim is a town in the state of Pará, on the north bank of the lower Amazon. The town itself is small and follows the riverbank, while the municipality is enormous, stretching far north through forest toward the Guiana Shield.
Within the municipality lies Monte Dourado, the company town built for the Jari project, the large forestry and pulp venture started by American businessman Daniel Ludwig in the late 1960s. Around Almeirim, flat-topped hills rise above the forest along the river, a distinctive feature of the lower Amazon landscape.
