Amami is the main city of Amami Ōshima, a subtropical island between Kyushu and Okinawa. Its centre, the old port town of Naze, lies around a sheltered bay, and from above the streets fill the narrow flat land between the water and steep, forested hills. Beyond the centre, the city stretches along a coastline of bays, inlets and small settlements.
The island is known for its subtropical forest, which in 2021 became part of a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, and for rare wildlife such as the Amami rabbit. Amami is also known for Ōshima tsumugi, a finely woven silk traditionally dyed with local mud. The island's culture has elements of both Kagoshima and Okinawa.
An Amami map poster shows the city's close relationship with the sea and the mountains: the curve of the bay, the dense streets around the port and the hills rising behind them. It suits anyone who has visited the island or has family there, and its coastal outline makes a strong composition.
The city centre wraps around a sheltered bay, its shoreline and harbour forming the main line of the composition.
Streets are packed into the thin strip of flat land between the water and the hills, giving the centre a dense, compact shape.
Steep hills covered with subtropical forest rise behind the city and appear as open space around the streets.

Ko e hā ʻa Amami
Amami is a place people remember for its forests, its coastline and its slower pace. A map of the port city is a quiet reminder of the island, well suited to a calm room.
