Anapa sits on the northeastern shore of the Black Sea, where the coast of Krasnodar Krai changes character. To the north, long sandy beaches and spits stretch toward lagoons and estuaries. To the south, the land rises into cliffs and forested hills. On a map, the town spreads along the shore between these two landscapes, with a promenade following the curve of the bay.
The town has ancient roots. Greek settlers founded Gorgippia here, and parts of it have been excavated in the town centre. The Russian Gates, a surviving fragment of an Ottoman fortress, recall a later period of conflict over this coast. Today Anapa is best known as a family resort, especially for its shallow, sandy beaches.

Resort promenade
Along the bay, a waterfront promenade and parallel streets trace the shore. Behind them the grid is denser, filled with the hotels, sanatoriums and houses of the resort.
Southern highlands
South of the town, the coast rises into cliffs and wooded hills. There the street pattern thins out quickly, and the map shows the change from beach resort to rugged coastline.
