Anbu is a town in Chaozhou’s Chao’an District in eastern Guangdong, on the level, fertile ground of the Han River delta near Shantou. From above, the landscape is mostly water and fields. Canals and river channels divide the land into irregular parcels, and ponds and paddies fill the spaces between clusters of houses.
Like much of the Chaoshan region, the settlement pattern is dense and compact. Older villages are made up of tightly packed lanes and courtyard houses, often facing ponds. Newer streets and small factories have grown up along the main roads, gradually joining the old villages into a single built-up area.
An Anbu map poster shows a delta landscape at close range. There are fine networks of village alleys, watercourses winding between them, and a few straight modern roads cutting across the pattern. It reads as a detailed, finely grained print, well suited to people who know the area’s lanes and waterways from home.
Branches of the Han River delta and irrigation channels thread through the town, dividing the land into irregular islands of fields and houses.
Traditional Chaoshan settlements form tight, fine-grained blocks of narrow alleys that show up as intricate texture on the map.
Straighter modern roads link Anbu to Chaozhou and Shantou, with newer buildings and workshops lining them through the older fabric.
