Apeldoorn sits on the eastern edge of the Veluwe, the largest forested area in the Netherlands. The town has an unusually loose shape for a Dutch town. Instead of a tight canal ring it grows outward in broad, leafy neighbourhoods of curving streets and detached houses, and on the western side the woods press right up against the built-up area. Motorways skirt the town, and a canal runs along its eastern side.
The town grew around the royal presence at Paleis Het Loo, the former hunting palace of the House of Orange with its formal baroque gardens, which is now a national museum. Apeldoorn is also known for Apenheul, a primate park where monkeys move freely among visitors, and for the network of cycling paths that lead from the town into the heath and forest.
An Apeldoorn map poster shows a town that mixes easily with its landscape. The dense street grid of the centre loosens into winding residential lanes. Large open spaces mark the palace grounds and parks, and the forest edge forms a soft, irregular border. The result is a light, airy composition, quite different from the dense grid of most Dutch towns.
The palace and its extensive park form a large, clearly defined open area on the north side of town. Straight avenues and geometric garden paths lead into it.
To the west, the streets stop abruptly at the forest. Scattered paths and cycle routes are all that continue, and they fade into a wide, quiet space on the map.
The Apeldoorns Kanaal runs past the eastern side of town in a long, straight line. Its clean water line contrasts with the curving residential streets.

Ko e hā ʻa Apeldoorn
Apeldoorn is a town people settle in for its space, woods and calm. A map of its streets and forest edge suits homes where cycling routes, weekend walks and the palace gardens are part of everyday life.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example a neighbourhood or a moving date, and choose Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper brings out the soft forest edge especially well.
