Ko e mape
Ar Raqqah lies in northern Syria on the left bank of the Euphrates, downstream from the large reservoir formed by the Tabqa Dam. The river runs along the southern edge of the city, wide and braided with sandbanks and green islands, and on a map it forms a strong horizontal boundary. North of the river, the city spreads across flat land toward the open steppe.
The most distinctive shape within the city is the horseshoe outline of the old walled town, founded in the eighth century as al-Rafiqa under the Abbasid caliph al-Mansur. Its straight southern side faces the river and its curved wall arcs to the north. Streets inside and around it form a largely regular grid that makes the historic core easy to recognise.
Harun al-Rashid made Raqqa his residence for several years at the end of the eighth century, and the city was briefly one of the most important in the Abbasid world. Streets north of the river follow a mostly orthogonal pattern, giving the map a steady structure around the older, curved core of the walled town.
