Araguatins lies on the left bank of the Araguaia River in the far north of Tocantins, in the region known as Bico do Papagaio. The river dominates the map: a wide, curving band of water with islands and sandbars, and the town's grid of streets packed along its bank.
During the dry season, the falling Araguaia exposes long sandy beaches, which draw visitors from across the region. On a map, the river's width and its scattered islands give the composition a loose, organic shape that contrasts with the straight blocks of the town next to it.
