Arauco sits on the Gulf of Arauco in Chile's Biobío region, south of Concepción. The coast here is a long, open curve, and the town lies near the shore, with a compact grid of streets and low hills rising behind it. Beaches and river mouths break the coastline on either side.
The name carries weight in Chilean history. Arauco was one of the early Spanish forts in the south, and the wider region gave its name to the long Arauco War between the Spanish and the Mapuche. Today the area is also known for forestry and a large pulp industry.
An Arauco map poster places the ordered town blocks against the sweep of the gulf. The sea takes up a generous part of the frame, while roads and river channels lead inland towards forested hills. It is a clean, coastal composition with a strong sense of place and history.
The broad gulf shapes the coastline in a long, smooth arc, giving the map a large area of open water and a strong natural border.
The centre follows a regular pattern of blocks laid out near the shore, a small, orderly shape that anchors the composition.
Rivers reach the sea near the town, and roads lead into the forested hills behind, adding curving lines and depth to the inland side of the map.
