Araya lies at the western tip of the Araya Peninsula in Sucre state, across the gulf from Cumaná. On the map the land is narrow and arid, bounded by water on several sides. The town is a small, loose grid near the shore. Beyond it the peninsula stretches east as a long strip of low hills and bare ground.
The area is defined by salt. Natural lagoons and evaporation pans have been worked here for centuries, and the Spanish built the Real Fortaleza de Santiago de Araya in the early seventeenth century to protect them. Its star-shaped ruins still stand on the coast above the town.
A Araya map poster shows this very particular place: an open sea surrounding a thin tongue of land, a few straight streets, the flat geometry of the salt works, and the angular outline of a colonial fort looking out over the water.
The ruined Fortaleza de Santiago sits on the coast in an angular, bastioned outline. It was built to guard the region's valuable salt.
Lagoons and evaporation ponds form flat, clean-edged shapes near the town. On the map they read as calm geometric fields.
Water on several sides gives the poster a strong outline. The gulf toward Cumaná lies to the south, and the Caribbean opens to the north.
