Arba Minch sits on high ground in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, between two large lakes: Abaya to the north and Chamo to the south. On a wider map the town looks like a hinge between these two bodies of water, with the steep wall of the rift rising to the west.
The town has two separate parts. Shecha is the upper settlement on the escarpment. Sikela is the lower one, closer to the groundwater forest. The name means forty springs, after the many springs that come up in the forest below the town. Arba Minch University is one of the main institutions in the area.
Across the narrow neck of land between the lakes, known locally as the Bridge of God, is Nechisar National Park. An Arba Minch map poster shows two town centres joined by a road, with forest, lakeshore and open savannah close by.
Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo lie on either side of the town. On a wider map they form two large, calm shapes with the settlement between them.
The upper and lower towns are separate clusters of streets joined by a connecting road, so the town has two distinct centres instead of one.
This narrow strip of land separating the two lakes leads to Nechisar National Park, and it is one of the region's most recognisable geographical features.

Ko e hā ʻa Arba Minch
The shape of Arba Minch is unusual: two towns, two lakes and a strip of land between them. It makes an unusual and personal map for anyone who studied here, worked here or travelled through the southern Rift Valley.
You can personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example with a graduation year. Choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand.
