Arfoud sits in the Tafilalt, the large date-palm oasis of southeastern Morocco watered by the Ziz River. The town was laid out as a French garrison post in the early twentieth century, and it still looks planned from above. Wide, straight streets form a grid, which stands out against the irregular green of the palm groves and the stony desert beyond.
It is well known as a starting point for trips to the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga, and as a centre for fossils. Ammonites and trilobites from the surrounding rock are cut and polished in local workshops. The town also holds a date festival that celebrates the harvest from the oasis.
An Arfoud map poster puts the geometry of a planned town against the soft edges of the oasis. The regular streets of the centre, the roads leading south into the desert and the palm groves together show where irrigated land ends and the Sahara begins.
The centre was laid out as a planned military post. Its straight, broad streets meet at right angles and form a crisp, regular core on the map.
The date palms of the Tafilalt surround the town along the Ziz valley. The irrigated land shows up as irregular shapes against the planned streets.
The route south toward Erzouga and Erg Chebbi leaves the town into open desert, a single line leading out of the frame toward the sand sea.

Ko e hā ʻa Arfoud
Many travellers pass through Arfoud on their way to the Sahara dunes, and a map of the town keeps that journey on the wall. The contrast of planned streets and oasis edges also makes a striking graphic.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates line, for example the dates of a desert trip. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, which suits the desert tones well. It comes as an HD download or a printed poster.
