Aripuanã lies in the far north-west of Mato Grosso, at the southern edge of the Amazon. The map shows a young, fairly regular street grid set beside the Aripuanã River, whose broad channel curves past the town. Past the last streets, the forest and scattered clearings take over and roads thin to a few long lines.
The river is the town's defining feature. A short distance away it drops over the Dardanelos and Andorinhas falls, a series of cascades that local people know well and that also supplies a hydroelectric plant. On a map, the river breaks into channels and rocky steps, which gives the composition a strong, irregular accent.

Downstream the river drops over the Dardanelos and Andorinhas falls. The rocky channels and cascades give the map a textured, fragmented section of water.
