Assendelft is part of Zaanstad in North Holland, and its map shows one of the classic shapes of the Dutch landscape: the lint village. For kilometres, houses line a single road on a dyke, while flat peat meadows stretch away on either side. Narrow drainage ditches cut the fields into long parallel strips, and they make a fine, regular texture across the polder.
The painter Pieter Saenredam was born here in 1597, and his precise paintings of the village church are well known in Dutch art. In recent decades a large new district, Saendelft, has grown on the southern side. Its planned streets and water features contrast sharply with the older ribbon settlement.
An Assendelft map poster captures both eras. The long line of the old village runs through open polder, and the newer neighbourhood adds a denser, organised pattern. With the ditches and waterways included, it is one of the most graphic small-town maps in the Netherlands.
