Athens lies in the hills of southeastern Ohio, at the edge of Appalachia, and is home to Ohio University, founded in 1804 as the first university in the Northwest Territory. From above, the town centre and campus sit together on a rise above the Hocking River, with streets climbing and descending the surrounding ridges in a pattern that bends to the terrain.
The Hocking curves around the south and west sides of town, and part of its course was straightened in the twentieth century to reduce flooding, giving the river an unusually smooth line on the map. Court Street, the main commercial street, runs past College Green, the historic heart of the university, where old brick buildings stand among paths and lawns.

The river sweeps around the town in a broad arc, its partly straightened channel creating a clean, bold line along the edge of the campus.
