Atmakūr lies in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, on the plains west of the Nallamala range. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets and lanes, with roads leaving in several directions toward villages and neighbouring towns. Farmland surrounds it in a patchwork of fields, irrigation tanks and field boundaries.
Several towns in India share the name Atmakūr. This one stands out for its location near the Nallamala forests, which cover the hills to the east and form part of a large protected tiger reserve.
