Atwater sits in Merced County, in the flat heart of California's Central Valley. Its streets follow the tidy grid typical of valley towns, set out along the railway and the main highway, with rectangular blocks spreading in each direction until they meet the orchards and field plots that surround the town.
North of the town lies the site of the former Castle Air Force Base, which closed in the mid-1990s. Its long runway remains a striking straight line on the map, and the Castle Air Museum now displays historic aircraft there. Farming, from almonds to dairy, shapes the landscape all around.
