Aubervilliers lies immediately north of Paris in Seine-Saint-Denis, separated from the capital by the Boulevard Périphérique at the Porte d'Aubervilliers. Its street pattern is dense and varied, mixing narrow older roads, large former industrial plots, housing estates and new developments. On a map it fits tightly into the continuous fabric of the northern suburbs, with few gaps between it and its neighbours.
The Canal Saint-Denis runs along the western side of the town. This straight line of water once served warehouses and factories and is now bordered by offices, studios and housing. Metro line 12 was extended to the town hall in 2022, and the Campus Condorcet, a major research and university site, opened here in 2019. The old Fort d'Aubervilliers survives in the east.
An Aubervilliers map poster shows a place in transition: the canal's straight edge, the large blocks of the industrial past, the older streets around the town centre and the ring road marking the city limit. It suits residents, students and researchers at Condorcet, and Parisians who know that the story of the city continues beyond the Périphérique.
The canal cuts a straight line through the western part of the town. Long former industrial plots flank it and read on the map as large, calm rectangles.
The southern boundary follows the Paris ring road and the Porte d'Aubervilliers. This hard band separates the capital's streets from the looser suburban pattern to the north.
The nineteenth-century fort in the east of the town remains visible as an angular outline among the surrounding streets and open ground, a legacy of the old defences of Paris.
