Āzādshahr sits in Golestan province in northeastern Iran, where the farmed lowlands start to meet the slopes of the eastern Alborz. On a map, the town is a compact cluster of streets strung along a main road. Farmland surrounds it, and the land to the south rises toward forested high ground. The layout is simple and easy to read.
Before the 1979 revolution the town was known as Shahpasand, and it later took its present name, which means free city. Golestan is one of Iran's greener provinces, with a damp climate influenced by the nearby Caspian Sea. The land around Āzādshahr is mostly fields, and the town serves as a local centre for the villages spread across it.
