Bacău lies in the historical region of Moldavia in eastern Romania, on the Bistrița River a short distance above its confluence with the Siret. From above, the river is the city's defining line. It is broken up into a series of lakes and reservoirs, which run along the eastern side of the centre. The historic core sits close to the water, and planned residential districts spread west and north in large, regular blocks.
The city is an important industrial and administrative centre, home to an aeronautical manufacturer and a university. Bacău is also closely associated with the Symbolist poet George Bacovia, who was born here and whose memorial house is a local landmark. Parks along the river and the lakes offer wide open spaces within the city.

Compact centre
The historic centre is a small cluster of older streets near the river. It is denser and more irregular than the planned districts that grew around it.

Residential quarters from the later twentieth century spread out in wide, regular blocks. They give the western part of the map a calm, orderly rhythm.
