Badlapur lies at the outer edge of the Mumbai metropolitan region, in Thane district, on the Central Railway suburban line toward Karjat. The town has grown rapidly as people moved outward in search of more space, and its map shows new residential blocks spreading on both sides of the railway.
The Ulhas River runs through the area, curving past the town in a broad, winding course. To the east, the land begins to rise toward the Western Ghats, and the hills form a natural backdrop to the growing town. The Barvi dam, which supplies water to much of the region, lies in these hills.
