Balikpapan lies on the east coast of Borneo, facing the Makassar Strait. From above, the city covers hilly ground between the open sea to the south and Balikpapan Bay to the west, a long, sheltered inlet that reaches deep inland. Its streets follow the terrain rather than a grid, winding over ridges and down to the shoreline.
The city grew around oil. Petroleum was discovered in the area in the late nineteenth century, and a large refinery still occupies part of the bay shore. Its tank farms and pipelines form blocks of distinct geometry on the map. Balikpapan remains an important energy and logistics centre for East Kalimantan, with a port and an airport on the coast.
Its role has grown further with the development of Nusantara, Indonesia's planned new capital inland to the north, and Balikpapan serves as its gateway. A Balikpapan map poster shows a city defined by water and slope. A long coastline, a deep bay and industrial edges frame it, with curving hill roads crossing the land in between.
A long, sheltered inlet runs inland west of the city. Its winding shores and quiet water form one of the strongest natural shapes on the poster.
The airport runway lies along the coast east of the centre. It is a straight line parallel to the shore that stands out clearly against the curving streets.
The oil refinery along the bay shore appears as a cluster of circles and rectangles. Its tanks and plots give the map an unusual industrial texture.

Many people come to Balikpapan for work in oil, logistics or the construction of the new capital, and some stay for years. A map of its coast and bay is a precise way to remember a particular chapter of life.
