Bandar-e Torkaman lies at the south-eastern corner of the Caspian Sea in Golestan province. It is close to Gorgan Bay, the shallow lagoon enclosed by the long Miankaleh peninsula. From above, the land is almost perfectly flat. The town is set out in fairly regular blocks that run towards the shore, and wetlands, canals and low coastal land surround it.
Under its former name, Bandar Shah, the town was the northern terminus of the Trans-Iranian Railway, and the line still reaches the coast here. It is a centre of the Turkmen community of north-eastern Iran, and the surrounding plain, known as the Turkmen Sahra, is open farmland and steppe. Boats leave from the area for Ashuradeh at the tip of the peninsula.
