Bathinda sits on the open plain of southwestern Punjab. From above it reads as a compact old core surrounded by newer sectors laid out in looser rectangles. At the heart of the old town stands Qila Mubarak, a brick fort counted among the oldest surviving in India and remembered as the place where Razia Sultan was held in the thirteenth century.
