Bau is in western Sarawak, southwest of Kuching and not far from the Indonesian border. On a map, the town is a small cluster of streets along the main road, surrounded by irregular hills. The limestone outcrops show as sudden green masses between roads and rivers.
The area has been mined for gold for a long time, and Chinese miners played a major part in its early history. One old mine pit filled with water to form Tasik Biru, a lake near the town. The limestone hills also contain well-known caves, including the Fairy Cave and the Wind Cave.
A Bau map poster shows a loose, organic arrangement of roads winding between hills, a compact town centre and smooth water shapes left by mining. Bidayuh villages are spread across the surrounding district, and the whole print feels close to the forest.
Steep karst outcrops rise near the town and break up the road network. Several contain caves that attract visitors from Kuching.
A lake formed in a flooded former gold-mine pit lies close to the town, appearing as a rounded water shape among the streets and trees.
Roads bend around hills and river valleys rather than running straight, giving the map a soft, meandering linework.
