From above, Beitbridge is shaped by the Limpopo River and the crossing over it. The river runs along the southern edge of the town, and the main road comes up from the bridge, carrying traffic north into Zimbabwe. Streets and neighbourhoods spread out from this corridor, and the dry landscape around them leaves the map mostly open.
Beitbridge is Zimbabwe's border town with South Africa, opposite Musina on the other side of the Limpopo. The town takes its name from the bridge, which was named after Alfred Beit, a financier whose trust funded it. The crossing is one of the busiest in southern Africa, with trucks and travellers moving between the two countries every day.
