Bela Vista sits in the southwest of Mato Grosso do Sul, right on the border between Brazil and Paraguay. The Apa River marks the frontier here, and across it lies the Paraguayan town of Bella Vista Norte. On a map the two towns face each other across the water, each with its own grid of streets.
The Brazilian side is laid out in a fairly regular pattern of blocks, typical of towns in this part of the country, with ranch land and open countryside stretching away from the edges. The shared name and the short crossing mean daily life here moves easily between two countries, languages and currencies.
A Bela Vista map poster makes the border visible in a way few places can. The river curves through the frame, separating two grids that are clearly related but not identical. It is a strong, simple composition, and the Blueprint style suits its almost diagrammatic look.
The winding river divides Brazil from Paraguay, a natural line running across the map between the two towns.
Bela Vista and Bella Vista Norte each have their own block layout, facing each other on opposite banks.
Beyond the town edges, long straight roads and large field boundaries mark the cattle country of the region.
