Bello lies at the northern end of the Aburrá Valley in Colombia's Antioquia department, directly north of Medellín, and the two cities have grown together. On the map, Bello fills the valley floor along the Medellín River. Steep mountainsides rise on either side, and the neighbourhoods on them follow the contours.
The river and the main road and rail corridor next to it run through the city from south to north, and they give the map its main axis. Denser, more regular blocks line the valley floor, while the hillside districts climb in winding streets that fade into green slopes near the ridges.
Bello is the end point of Line A of the Medellín Metro, which runs along the valley to Niquía station. It is also the birthplace of Marco Fidel Suárez, a Colombian president of the early twentieth century. A Bello map poster shows the valley at its narrowest, with the city pressed between the river and the mountains.
The river runs north through the valley floor with transport lines alongside it, forming the central axis of the city's layout.
Neighbourhoods climb the mountainsides on curving streets, and the pattern loosens and thins as the ground gets steeper.
Line A of the metro ends at Niquía in Bello, making the city the northern end of the valley's main transit corridor.
