Diagonal avenue grid
Two grids laid over each other, one of streets and one of broader avenues at an angle, create a lattice of triangular blocks that looks almost like a drawing exercise.

Belo Horizonte was one of Brazil's first planned cities, laid out by the engineer Aarão Reis and inaugurated in 1897 as the new capital of Minas Gerais. Its original plan is still easy to read from above: a square grid of streets overlaid by a second grid of wide avenues set at forty-five degrees, so that the blocks are sliced into triangles and diamonds.
The planned core is enclosed by the Avenida do Contorno, a ring road that follows the edge of the original urban zone. Beyond it the city spreads outward in a far less orderly way, climbing hills and filling valleys. To the south, the Serra do Curral ridge forms a hard natural limit, and on a map the streets stop abruptly where the slopes begin.
North of the centre lies the Pampulha reservoir, whose shoreline holds the modernist buildings Oscar Niemeyer designed in the 1940s, a group listed by UNESCO in 2016. A Belo Horizonte map poster shows the contrast between that loose lake edge and the rigid geometry inside the Contorno, which is what makes the city so recognisable in black and white.
Two grids laid over each other, one of streets and one of broader avenues at an angle, create a lattice of triangular blocks that looks almost like a drawing exercise.
A single road loops around the planned centre, marking the boundary of the 1897 city. It frames the core like a border drawn around a diagram.
An irregular reservoir to the north, ringed by an avenue and by Niemeyer's church, former casino and dance hall, adds a soft, open shape to an otherwise dense map.

Ko e hā ʻa Belo Horizonte
Belo Horizonte residents tend to know their city by its avenues and by which side of the Contorno they live on, and the poster makes that structure visible at a glance. It also suits anyone who likes planned cities and the clarity of a good grid.
Each poster can carry your own title, subtitle and coordinates, so it can mark a neighbourhood, a year or a family name. The five styles run from Classic black & white and Noir to Paper, Blueprint and Sand, and the digital files include six print sizes.
