Berehove lies in the far west of Ukraine, in Zakarpattia, a short distance from the border with Hungary. The town stands where the flat lowland of the upper Tisza basin meets the first low hills. On the map its streets fan out from a small central area and give way to fields on the plain and vineyards on the rising ground.
Known in Hungarian as Beregszász, Berehove is the main centre of the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia, and signs, schools and churches reflect this mixed heritage. The town is known for its wine, grown on the nearby slopes, and for its thermal baths, fed by warm mineral springs.
