Bessemer lies southwest of Birmingham in Jefferson County, Alabama. It was founded in 1887 as an industrial town and named after Henry Bessemer, the English inventor of the steelmaking process. Its map still shows that origin. The downtown is a regular grid of streets, laid out with purpose, and railroad lines pass through and around it.
As the town grew, residential neighbourhoods spread across the surrounding ridges and valleys, following the rolling terrain of the Birmingham district. Former industrial sites and rail yards leave large, empty or irregular areas on the map. Interstate highways add long curves along the edges. Bessemer also hosts a division of the Jefferson County courthouse, a result of the county's unusual split court system.
The Bessemer map poster captures an industrial American town in clean lines: a planned grid, strong rail corridors and neighbourhoods adapting to the hills. It is a meaningful image for families whose history is tied to Alabama's iron and steel industry, and for anyone who appreciates the structure of a working town.
The centre was laid out in the late nineteenth century as a regular grid, still the most orderly part of the map.
Railroad lines built for the iron and steel industry run through the town. They are long, clean lines that cut across the street grid.
Beyond the centre, residential streets curve with the rolling hills of the Birmingham district, softening the edges of the composition.
