Bhachāu lies in the eastern part of Kutch district in Gujarat, on flat, arid land not far from the edge of the Little Rann of Kutch. On a map the town looks compact, surrounded by open terrain rather than forests or farmland, with main roads and a railway line running through it toward the ports and industrial towns of the Gulf of Kutch.
The town is closely associated with the Gujarat earthquake of January 2001, whose epicentre lay nearby.
