Bhanga lies in Faridpur District, on the low, fertile delta land of central Bangladesh south-west of the Padma. The area is crossed by rivers and channels, and the older town grew along the water. From above, the traditional centre is a dense patch of lanes and markets, surrounded by villages, fields, ponds and trees scattered across flat land.
In recent years Bhanga has become known as a transport hub. The expressway from Dhaka via the Padma Bridge reaches the town and branches here towards the south-west, meeting at a large interchange whose loops and ramps stand out clearly on any map. A new railway line built with the Padma Bridge also passes through, linking the town more closely with the capital.
