Bikaner lies in the Thar Desert of northwest Rajasthan, and its map is defined by density against emptiness. The old walled city is a tight knot of narrow, winding lanes, while outside the walls the streets open up into wider roads and newer neighbourhoods that fade into sand and scrub.
Rao Bika founded the city in 1488, and just outside the old walls stands Junagarh Fort, built in the late sixteenth century. Unusually for Rajasthan, it sits on level ground rather than a hilltop, and from above its walls and moat form a strong, almost rectangular outline.
