Bingöl lies in eastern Turkey, in a high basin surrounded by mountains at more than 1,100 metres above sea level. From above the city spreads across the valley floor and up the lower slopes, its central streets fairly dense and regular, while outer neighbourhoods follow the contours of the hills in curving lines and terraces.
The name is usually translated as thousand lakes, a reference to the many small lakes scattered across the high mountains of the province. The city itself is a regional centre for a largely rural, mountainous area, and much of its current urban fabric dates from recent decades, as new neighbourhoods have spread outward from the old core.
