Bioko lies in the Gulf of Guinea, much closer to the coast of Cameroon than to mainland Equatorial Guinea, yet it holds the country's capital, Malabo. The island is long and rounded, runs from northeast to southwest, and is almost entirely volcanic. On a map, most roads and settlements cling to the coast, and the steep interior is left largely open.
Pico Basilé, the island's highest mountain, rises in the north just behind Malabo, with a road climbing toward the summit. The south is wetter and more remote. There, the Gran Caldera de Luba and forested slopes run down to beaches where sea turtles nest. Much of the southern land is protected and known for its rare primates.
Under Spanish rule the island was called Fernando Pó, after the Portuguese navigator usually credited with sighting it. Malabo keeps a compact colonial street grid on the coast around its bay, the most regular pattern on the island. A Bioko map poster shows that small grid, the roads running along the coast and the wide empty slopes in between.

The highest point on the island, a volcanic peak rising behind Malabo. The road winding up its flank is one of the few lines that cross the interior on the map.
In the south, the Gran Caldera de Luba forms a vast volcanic hollow near the coast, surrounded by forest. Few roads reach this part of the island, so it prints as quiet space.

Few casual travellers ever see Bioko, which gives its map real meaning for those who know it: people from Malabo, energy workers who lived there, conservation researchers and anyone with ties to Equatorial Guinea. Its simple, strong outline sits well in a home or an office.
