Borda da Mata is in the far south of Minas Gerais, in hilly country near the Serra da Mantiqueira. Terrain shapes the town. From above, the streets do not form a neat grid but bend around slopes and valley floors, and the built-up area stretches along the lower ground where building is easiest.
The centre is compact, and the main streets are tightly spaced. Beyond it, residential streets climb the surrounding hills and then give way to rural roads and fields. The resulting outline is irregular and organic, typical of the small towns scattered through the uplands of southern Minas.
Borda da Mata is widely known in Brazil for its garment industry, especially pyjama production, which supports many local businesses.
