Breu Branco is in the state of Pará in northern Brazil, close to the Tocantins River and the large reservoir created by the Tucuruí dam. From above the town appears as a grid of long, straight streets set among cleared land and remnant forest, with the reservoir's irregular shoreline and many inlets nearby.
The town grew in the later decades of the twentieth century, closely linked to the development of the dam and the region's roads. Its plan reflects that recent growth: regular blocks, a main road running through, and neighbourhoods expanding outward.
