Buíque lies in the interior of Pernambuco, where the Agreste turns into the drier sertão. The town itself is compact, a modest grid of streets around a central square and church, with roads leaving in several directions across a sparse, open landscape. On a wider map, the terrain becomes more dramatic: plateaus, sandstone ridges and dry valleys with few settlements.
The municipality is best known as a gateway to the Catimbau National Park, a protected area of caatinga vegetation, sandstone formations and canyons.
