Bukittinggi sits at about 900 metres in the highlands of West Sumatra, between the volcanoes Marapi and Singgalang. The town's name means high hill, and on the map it is clear why: streets curve around rises and dips, and there is no regular grid. The centre is compact, with markets, stairways and short winding lanes.
On the western edge of the town, the Sianok Canyon cuts a deep, steep-sided valley, and the streets stop abruptly at its rim. On the map, this appears as a sharp boundary between the town and the open land beyond, with roads curving down into the valley and back up.
At the heart of the town stands the Jam Gadang clock tower, and Bukittinggi was the birthplace of Mohammad Hatta, Indonesia's first vice president. It is also a centre of Minangkabau culture. A Bukittinggi map poster shows a hill town shaped entirely by its terrain, with the canyon as a dramatic edge.
The deep canyon cuts along the western edge of town, where streets stop at the rim and the map suddenly opens out.
Roads loop and twist over the uneven ground, giving the town a flowing, irregular pattern with no straight grid.
The clock tower square sits at the heart of the town, where the busiest markets and densest streets come together.

Ko e hā ʻa Bukittinggi
Bukittinggi holds a special place for Minangkabau families and for travellers who have walked its hills and looked out over the canyon. A map of the town keeps that highland setting visible in a calm, graphic form.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper suits the town's soft, curving streets.
