Bulqizë lies in the mountains of Dibër County in northeastern Albania. It is a town shaped by work underground. It grew around one of the country's most important chromium ore deposits, and mining has defined its economy and much of its layout for decades. The mountains around it are high and steep, and the town fills the ground available in the valley.
On the map, Bulqizë looks compact and linear. A main road runs along the valley. Residential blocks and streets sit on either side, and service roads lead off toward the mine sites on the slopes. The pattern is practical rather than picturesque. Its straight blocks and access roads reflect a planned twentieth-century industrial settlement more than an old market town.
