Burnley lies in a valley on the western edge of the Pennines, at the meeting point of the River Brun and the River Calder. On the map, rows of terraced streets fill the lower ground, and open moorland rises on the edges. The river lines wind through the town centre before joining.
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal runs through Burnley, crossing the valley on a raised embankment known as the Straight Mile. Beside it, the Weavers' Triangle keeps old mills and warehouses from the time when Burnley was one of the world's great cotton-weaving towns. Turf Moor, home of Burnley FC, is just east of the centre.

Long rows of terraced housing are arranged in parallel lines across the neighbourhoods. They give the print a regular, striped texture typical of northern mill towns.

The Brun and the Calder wind through the town and meet near the centre. Their curves soften the otherwise regular pattern of terraces.
