Buynaksk lies in the foothills of Dagestan, in the North Caucasus, inland from the Caspian coast and Makhachkala. The town sits in a valley surrounded by ridges and slopes, and from above its streets fill the flatter ground of the basin before thinning out where the land climbs. The mountains give the map a strong enclosing frame.
The central part of town has a relatively regular grid, a legacy of its development as a military and administrative centre in the nineteenth century. Around it, streets become less orderly as they spread up the slopes, and roads leave the valley through gaps in the hills toward the coast and the mountain districts.
The town was known as Temir-Khan-Shura and served as the capital of Dagestan until the early 1920s, when the capital moved to Makhachkala. It was later renamed after the revolutionary Ullubiy Buynaksky. A Buynaksk map poster shows a town defined by its valley, with its grid set inside a ring of foothills.
The town fills a basin between foothill ridges, so the streets form a compact shape surrounded by open, rising land.
The older centre has a fairly regular street pattern, linked to the town's history as a military and administrative base, clearly visible at the heart of the map.
Main roads leave through gaps in the surrounding ridges toward the coast and the mountains, drawing winding lines across the edges of the poster.
