Calbuco lies in Chile's Los Lagos region, on the Reloncaví Sound south-west of Puerto Montt. The old town stands on a small island, connected to the mainland by a causeway. From above, it is surrounded by water: the town's streets cover a compact piece of land, and around it lie channels, peninsulas and a scatter of smaller islands.
The town dates from the Spanish colonial period and began as a fort. Today, fishing and salmon farming are central to the local economy, and pens and piers dot the surrounding water. The Calbuco volcano, which shares the name and erupted in 2015, actually lies well to the east, beyond Lake Llanquihue.
A Calbuco map poster is defined by its coastline. The island town, the thin line of the causeway and the complex edges of the surrounding islands and inlets create an intricate composition. Water takes up much of the frame, and the town sits within it like a small, carefully drawn anchor.
The historic centre fills a small island. Its streets are compact and bounded on every side by the shoreline, which is clearly visible.
A narrow causeway carries the road to the mainland, a single straight line across the water that joins island and continent.
Numerous islands and inlets of the Reloncaví Sound surround the town, giving the map an intricate coastline and plenty of open water.

For people from Chiloé and the Los Lagos coast, or visitors who crossed the causeway, Calbuco is instantly recognisable from its outline in the sea.
