Capão da Canoa lies on the northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul, where a long, almost unbroken beach runs along the Atlantic. From above, the town forms a regular grid of streets parallel and perpendicular to the shore. On the inland side, coastal lagoons and wetlands spread across the flat land, so the town sits in a narrow band between ocean and freshwater.
The town is one of the main summer resorts for people from Porto Alegre and the surrounding region, and its population swells during the holiday season. Apartment buildings line the waterfront, while quieter streets extend inland toward the lagoons. The long beach, with its wide sand and open sea, is the main attraction.
A Capão da Canoa map poster shows the coastline as a single strong line, the grid of streets behind it and the softer shapes of the lagoons inland. It is a simple and balanced composition, well suited to anyone who has spent summers here or has family along the coast.
The coast runs straight for many kilometres, and on the map it becomes a clean line with the open ocean filling one side of the frame.
Streets form a tidy grid behind the beach, with long avenues running parallel to the shore and short cross streets leading down to the sand.
Coastal lagoons and wetlands lie west of town, their soft outlines adding contrast to the straight streets and coastline.
