Capitol Riverfront is the Washington, D.C. neighbourhood between the Southeast Freeway and the Anacostia River, a short walk south of the Capitol. On a map it reads as a tidy section of the city grid, with New Jersey Avenue and neighbouring streets running straight down to the water. The river forms a broad, clean edge along its southern side.
Much of the area's shape comes from the Washington Navy Yard, one of the oldest installations of the US Navy, whose large, walled grounds occupy the eastern part of the district. To the west, Nationals Park, opened in 2008, sits as a distinctive oval among rectangular blocks. Between them, Yards Park and the riverwalk trace the shoreline with landscaped paths.
Over the past two decades former industrial land here has been rebuilt with apartments, offices and parks, and the street pattern now looks fuller and more complete than it once did. A Capitol Riverfront map poster shows that compact urban piece in clear detail: the grid, the freeway boundary, the ballpark, the Navy Yard and the long curve of the Anacostia.
The river forms a wide southern edge, with the riverwalk and Yards Park following the shoreline where the city grid comes to an end.
The ballpark's rounded footprint stands out clearly among rectangular blocks, one of the most recognisable shapes in this part of Washington.
The Navy's historic grounds form a large, self-contained block with its own internal layout, set apart from the surrounding public streets.
