Careiro da Várzea lies on the southern side of the Amazon, facing Manaus across the water, near the meeting of the dark Rio Negro and the muddy Solimões. As its name suggests, it belongs to the várzea, the floodplain that is submerged for part of each year when the rivers rise. On a map, water dominates: channels, lakes and islands shape everything.
The settlement itself is small, arranged along the higher ground by the river, with streets and houses where the land stays dry longest. Much of the municipality is laced with side channels and seasonal lakes, and many communities are reached by boat. Livestock and fishing are important, adapted to the rise and fall of the water.
