Ko e mape
Carmópolis is a town in the state of Sergipe in northeastern Brazil, not far inland from the Atlantic coast. The town itself is small and compact, with a few streets around a central square. What makes the map unusual is the surrounding landscape, which is threaded with the access roads of an oil field.
The Carmópolis oil field was discovered in the 1960s and became one of the most significant onshore fields in Brazil. Around the town, the land is marked by a network of tracks and clearings linking the wells, set among sugarcane and pasture typical of the region.
A Carmópolis map poster shows both sides of the place: a modest town centre and an unusual, spreading pattern of industrial roads around it. The result is an intricate map that looks almost like a circuit diagram in some styles, especially Blueprint.
The centre of Carmópolis is a small grid of streets around a main square. It forms a compact cluster that is easy to pick out on the map.
Access roads and tracks branch out across the countryside to connect the wells. They form a dense, irregular web that dominates the surroundings.
Between the industrial tracks, the land is divided into fields and pasture. Their outlines add a quieter layer to the drawing.
