Cayman Brac is the easternmost of the three Cayman Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the western Caribbean. On a map it is a slender strip of land running roughly west to east, about twelve miles long and little more than a mile wide. Its name comes from the Gaelic word for bluff, a reference to the limestone plateau that rises steadily toward the eastern end.
Roads follow the north and south coasts at the foot of the Bluff, with a few routes climbing onto the plateau and crossing its scrub-covered top. The airport sits at the lower western end, where the land is flattest. At the eastern tip the cliffs drop straight into the sea, and a lighthouse stands near the edge.
The limestone is riddled with caves, several of which are said to have sheltered islanders during hurricanes. The island is also known for its diving, including a Russian-built frigate deliberately sunk off the northwest coast as an artificial reef.
