Chabahar sits on the southeastern coast of Iran, in Sistan and Baluchestan province, on a broad bay opening onto the Gulf of Oman. Unlike Iran's other main ports, it lies outside the Strait of Hormuz and faces the Indian Ocean directly. On the map the bay's gentle crescent dominates, with the town at one end of its shore and Konarak across the water.
The streets of the older centre are compact and low, while newer districts, the port and a free trade zone spread along the coast in wide, regular blocks. The land behind is flat and arid, crossed by long roads and dry channels. As a result, the town's outline and the smooth curve of the shoreline stand out sharply against the surrounding ground.
Chabahar's Shahid Beheshti port has been expanded with Indian involvement as a gateway to Afghanistan and Central Asia.
