Chak Jhumra lies in Faisalabad District in Pakistan's Punjab, a short distance from the city of Faisalabad. The town itself is compact, built around its railway station and main bazaar, but the wider area is striking on a map because of the land around it: a flat plain divided into regular fields and crossed by irrigation channels, a legacy of the canal colonies laid out in the colonial era.
The word chak refers to the numbered village settlements created when this part of Punjab was irrigated and settled in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
